John Muir Trail
In August and September of 2023, Nathaniel thru-hiked the John Muir Trail with his brother, covering 211 official miles (and around 230 miles overall) through Yosemite, several wilderness areas, Devils Postpile, and Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. Highlights included climbing Half Dome’s cables, crossing eight named mountain passes, and summiting Mt. Whitney. The trip was disrupted partway through by Hurricane Hilary, which forced an improvised reroute around a washed-out bridge — a climb of more than 1,700 feet at an average grade of nearly 40%.
